“And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”

Luke 14:27-28

In today’s reading, Jesus is quite firm, saying we can only be his disciple if we are willing to pick up our cross and follow.  Yet how often are we tempted to be a follower of Jesus by word only, or to give up following when the cross is very heavy?  However, a true follower of Jesus is willing and ready to bear the cross with their life.

In carrying our cross, we must remember that there is also a far greater reward; to grow in our union and communion with God, and to share our life with him and allow him to share his divine life with us.  This is a great privilege.  So today, let us pray for the endurance and strength to carry our own particular cross, and allow it to draw us closer to God, knowing that he works all things for good, and will never leave our side.
