Divine Mercy Sunday
“Eight days later, Jesus came again and stood among them.”
John 20:19-31
Each year, on the 2nd Sunday of Easter, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast established by Pope John Paul II. It is a day when we contemplate God’s mercy. Jesus told Sr Faustina, “Humanity will not find peace until it turns trustfully to divine mercy.”
Today’s gospel also speaks about the peace that comes from allowing Jesus to stand in our midst. After Jesus’ death, the disciples were afraid without Him. They had lost their courage and peace. Jesus, aware of their distress, came to the place where they were, showing them his hands and feet.
Today, Jesus is mindful of where we are and what we are feeling: fear, uncertainty, and distress. He comes and stands in our midst and says to us, “Peace be with you.” What do these words mean to us? Do we allow the risen Lord’s words to sink deep in our hearts and be stronger than the different anxieties we might be experiencing?
