“Let our sacrifice to you today be a contrite soul and humbled spirit.”

Daniel 3:25, 34-43

The prophet Daniel was speaking to the Jewish people at their lowest point, they were few in number and had been brought low by their sin. They asked God to remember His covenant to multiply their descendants like the stars of heaven. Earlier in the Jewish people’s relationship with God, they thought that they should offer burnt animals or incense to please Him. But God has revealed to us through His prophets, and especially through His Son Jesus, that He wants us to offer Him our contrite, repentant hearts and our humble spirits. Then, we will be able to unreservedly follow Him.

When we look at Jesus, we can see how He had no barriers between Himself and His Father. God is asking us to humble ourselves and be healed of our sins, so that we can also grow closer to Him. We can offer material sacrifices, such as money, but we can also take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent to come back to God. Then, we can celebrate Easter and be delivered by God and bring glory to Him.
