Saint Matthew, Apostle, Evangelist

“It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick.”

Matthew 9:9-13

In today’s passage, Jesus challenges societal norms and religious traditions by associating with people considered sinful and unworthy. Jesus demonstrates his inclusive love and acceptance of those deemed sinners by calling Matthew, a tax collector considered an outcast by society. He breaks barriers and shows that no one is beyond redemption or undeserving of

his mercy. Through his actions and teachings about mercy over sacrifice, Jesus emphasises love, compassion, and forgiveness. He highlights the essence of his message: prioritise relationships with others over rigid adherence to religious rules. Jesus calls on us to show empathy and kindness to those who are marginalised, reminding us that it is through compassion and understanding that we truly live out our faith.

The gospel invites us to recognise that God’s kingdom is open to all, calls us to mercy over ritual, and challenges us to embody inclusive love in our daily lives. Reflect on this verse and consider how you can embody Jesus’ teachings in your own life and reach out to those who are often overlooked or judged by society.
