“Why are you envious because I am generous?”
Matthew 20: 1-16
Over the past few weeks, we have been invited to reflect on key virtues in our Christian journey, particularly love and forgiveness. And today we consider generosity. These virtues are deeply connected: as we grow in love, we are called to forgive, and through forgiveness, we learn to become more generous. Today’s Gospel challenges us to look honestly at our hearts. Like the workers who laboured all day, we can sometimes feel entitled, thinking, We have done this, so we deserve that. We can compare ourselves with others and wonder why someone who has done less, or who has come to God later in life, should receive the same generosity. Yet Jesus asks us, “Why be envious because I am generous?”
This reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God: our life, our abilities, our faith, our relationships and every opportunity to serve. Rather than focusing on what we think we deserve, we are invited to become grateful for what we have received. God calls each of us at different times and excludes no one. Instead of judging or comparing, we are invited to rejoice when others experience His mercy and love.
