“The prodigal son.”
Luke 15:1-3,11-32
Today, we see a stark contrast between the two sons, the one who left but returned, and the one who stayed but became resentful. While this may seem surprising, the son who left actually knew his father’s heart, while the one who stayed did not. The son who left returned because he knew his father was good and merciful, and that there would always be a place for him at home. However, the son who stayed did not understand his father’s heart. He felt that his father was being unfair, or that he was loved less because he was not rewarded accordingly.
So, do we know the Father’s heart? While we may do what is required of us, we are not meant merely to follow a list of rules or obligations, but we are called to have a relationship with him. It is through that relationship that we experience the Father’s grace and have a personal encounter with him, leading to a true transformation of heart and repentance, just like the prodigal son.
Let us ask the Father to help us pray more faithfully so that we may come to know him more deeply and understand his heart better. Amen.
