“This is the landlord’s heir: come, let us kill him.”
Matthew 21:33-43,45-46
As we move forward in our Lenten journey towards the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are invited to reflect on this parable of the ‘wicked tenants’. The image of the vineyard is clear: it represents the people that the Lord has chosen and formed with such care and love. The servants sent by the landowner are the prophets, sent by God, while the son represents Jesus. And just as the prophets were rejected, so too is Jesus rejected and killed.
Where do we fit into this passage? Who do we identify with in this story? Each one of us has been entrusted with our life, and with that life comes the invitation and responsibility to live our life with generosity, humility, honesty and respect for all. The tenets Jesus refers to in this parable were meant to be caretakers, to look after the vineyard, but they became greedy and self-centred. Are there any traces of greed and self- centredness in our lives? Lord, we pray for the gift of humility and selflessness so that our every action and word might be done in love and for the building and safeguarding of your vineyard.
