“Anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it.”
Matthew 5:20-26
In today’s reading, Jesus points out the commandment, ‘you shall not kill’, to show the meaning behind the rule; to avoid anything that ‘kills’ love inside us; anger, jealously, envy, etc. Jesus gives the commandments a deeper meaning, showing how they are designed to lead us closer to God and to love.
The scribes and pharisees knew the commandments, but did it make them more loving? They used the commandments to turn Jesus over to be killed. What about us? Do we just follow the ‘rules’, or do we allow them to shape us to become more like Christ, in our thoughts and attitudes as well? Jesus asks us to forgive and be reconciled if we too are to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. Today, let us ask Jesus how we can practice this in our own lives, and how he is inviting us to grow deeper in our loving like him.
