“Blessed is the man who endures trial,
for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.”
James 1:12
Is God promising to make us kings and queens in Heaven? No, the crown of life that St James wrote about is a garland of laurel foliage that, in ancient times, was placed upon the head of a victorious athlete as a prize of honour in a contest. We can imagine winning our favourite event at the Olympics and being on the highest podium.
The crown that Jesus promises us is much greater than any money and prestige that we could receive on earth. Jesus promises us eternal life if we endure temptation and stay any tests of faith that we have. We should be joyful when we face testing because it produces endurance. If we avoid conflicts and trials, we won’t grow. But if we face difficulties knowing that God is with us, we will become mature and complete, lacking in nothing. Jesus , please help us to face our trials of faith with joy and peace, so that everyone will see how you reward those who love you. Remind us of the prize that you will give to us when we enter your kingdom of Heaven.
