Saint Mary Magdalene
“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.”
Psalm 63: 1-6, 8-9
When have we felt really thirsty? We may have been on a bush walk on a hot day. Or we may have been sick with a fever. The psalmist King David writes, “My soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” We can imagine that we are back in the situation of our physical thirst. This imagery of thirst highlights our deep need for God. Just as our bodies require water to survive, our souls need the living water that only God can provide.
How do we satisfy our need for God? Jesus is the living water who we can receive through prayer with his Word. He also gives us the gifts of the sacraments through His church. Jesus wants to refresh and sustain us by feeding us with His body through the Eucharist. Then our souls will be satisfied as with a rich feast, and our mouths will praise God with joyful lips. Jesus wants to satisfy our spiritual thirst, so that we can share his living water with others.
