“He is God, not of the dead, but of the living.”

Luke 20:27,34-38

The Sadducees in Jesus’ time did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. And so, in this passage, they’re making fun of Jesus and the teaching of the resurrection by coming up to him with a story of a man who had married five times.

Jesus does not answer their question but goes to the heart of the gospel. For Jesus, no one is dead and gone, but all are alive in him. Jesus reminds them that God is a God of the living and not of the dead. And that the resurrection is a reality here and how.

Today let us pray for the gift of faith to believe in the promise of the resurrection from the dead. And may we also believe that when we die, we remain safely in God’s loving embrace.
