“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
1 John 5:8-15
Today’s reading speaks of three witnesses, the ‘spirit, the water, and the blood’, as evidence of the presence of Jesus. The Spirit, who brings Christ to us; the waters of baptism, which leaves an indelible mark on us as eternally belonging to God as his son or daughter; and the blood of Jesus’ body broken and shared for us in the eucharist.
Through the sacraments, we receive the very life of Christ within us, and through the eucharist, Jesus chooses to remain with us. We don’t have to wait, but we begin this eternal life now. For eternal life is to be filled with the living presence of Christ. How do we experience Christ’s presence with us this side of heaven? We pray for our eyes to be open to the opportunities to partake in the eternal life today, to be with Christ, to walk with him, and to friendship with him.
