“They recognised him at the breaking of bread.”

Luke 24:13-35

As we continue to reflect on the encounters between Jesus and the disciples after the Resurrection, we are drawn into the journey of the two disciples who left Jerusalem with heavy hearts, believing their hopes had come to an end. Yet on the road to Emmaus, the risen Jesus came alongside them, though they did not recognise him, and gently opened the Scriptures to them. In the breaking of the bread, their eyes were opened, and their sorrow was turned to joy. Filled with renewed hope and wonder, they returned to Jerusalem to share the good news with the other disciples.

What about us? Where are we today? As we begin our prayer, do we need Jesus to help us understand our life circumstances in the light of the Word of God? In our disappointments, fears, and anxieties, do we allow Jesus to draw near to us? When we go to Mass and receive him in the Eucharist, Jesus becomes one with us. May our eyes, minds, and hearts be open to his presence and to his deep love for us.
