The Ascension of Jesus
“He withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.”
Luke 24:46-53
Today, we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. What must this have been like for the disciples? No doubt a mixture of emotions, Jesus was leaving them, but they had the promise of the Spirit. Jesus would be with them in a new way, and they were called to collaborate to continue making Jesus present in the world. We recall the words of Saint Therese: “Christ has nobody now, but yours no hands, not feet but yours…”
As we meditate on the Ascension of Jesus, may we also feel the call of Jesus to be his hands, feet, eyes and mouth in the world. Jesus continues to act in the world through the holy spirit and concretely through each one of us when we choose to allow the Holy Spirit to act in and through us. How is the Holy Spirit moving us today to be his witnesses in our families, in our workplaces, among our friends? Let us remember that if we act in the Spirit, Christ is acting. If we do not, the Spirit is stifled.
