“See how my beloved come, leaping on the mountains.”
Song of Songs 2:8-14
John the Baptist is one of the “precursors” during this Season of Advent. In the liturgy readings, we have heard how John is the voice calling out to prepare the way for the Lord’s coming by making his paths straight, filling the valleys and making the hills low. The passage today is a stark contrast because it depicts the “lover” (Jesus) who is springing across the mountains, leaping over the hills…behind our wall.” (v8, 9).
The Father’s Love is so great that he comes to us in Jesus! And there is nothing stopping him from coming! This is what we celebrate at Christmas; God’s Love draws near to us in Jesus.
“My lover speaks to me, “Arise, my love, my beautiful one! Come.” It is an invitation to accept his coming and leave the “winter” and the “rains.” It is a new season now for us with the coming of our Saviour. It is a time for new life. Our Saviour comes to us. Will we meet him when he comes? Will we leave the cold and rainy season in our spiritual life? Will we bring down the wall? Because OUR SAVIOUR IS COMING, HE DRAWS NEAR, HE IS NEAR.
