4th week of Advent
“Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?”
Luke 1:39-45
Today, we are invited to meditate on the willingness and generosity of Mother Mary to accept God’s will and plan for her life. When the angel came to Mary with the announcement that she would be the mother of God, she was afraid, unsure and surprised—a feeling that we, too, can have at times when God comes to us. Despite Mary’s feelings, she was not prevented from thinking about the needs of others. In our passage today, we see Mary making the 5-day journey to visit her elderly cousin Elizabeth. How do we live our lives at the service of others regardless of the cost?
Because of Mary’s willingness to go, she and Elizabeth shared a beautiful encounter that would confirm them both in God’s work of salvation. We, too, receive much joy and blessing when we follow the voice of God and go out of ourselves to the encounter of others. Today, we ask Mother Mary for her intercession so that we can follow in her footsteps and visit people in our lives who need God’s love, kindness, and compassion.
