“A prophet is only despised in his own country.”

Matthew 13:54-58

Jesus went to his hometown, where he taught in the synagogue. The town’s people were marveling at his wisdom and they were in disbelief it was Jesus. They could only see Jesus in the familiar way they always saw him: as a carpenter’s son, the son of Mary. Jesus was more recognised outside of his town than by his own family and town. As a result, he was unable to perform many miracles there. They failed to see Jesus as the Son of God and only perceived his ordinariness.

In our own spiritual life, has Jesus become too familiar, too ordinary for us? Can we perceive the extraordinariness of who Jesus is? What is our belief in Jesus like? How do we allow Jesus to “do miracles” in our own lives?”
