“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary….”

John 19:25-27

What must it have been like for Mary near the foot of the cross of Jesus her son? Her life was not easy. Her own crosses, her sacrifices, faith, endurance, perseverance, and love did not go unnoticed by Jesus as he saw her standing near the foot of his cross.

We can seek Mary’s support in how to stay committed to love, to Jesus, through uncertainty, confusion, being misunderstood, judged, and separated from those we love by circumstance or death. Do we realise that God, like Mary sees our pain and our willingness to stay open to what he asks of us? We are not alone in carrying our cross.
