“Do not repay anyone evil for evil… Beloved, never avenge yourselves…

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Romans 12:17–21

Praying this passage emphasises the importance of living righteously and avoiding retaliation in respo nse to evil. We are powerfully reminded to overcome evil with good, to resist retaliation and instead to show kindness, love, and forgiveness towards those who wrong us, trusting in God’s ultimate justice and judgment. We do not respond to wrongdoing with more wrongdoing but to counteract evil with goodness. At times, it may feel instinctive to seek revenge or retaliation when we are wronged, but we are urged to rise above our anger and respond with compassion and love instead. Have you ever held onto anger or grudges, only to find that it brings more negativity into your life? Today’s passage speaks to our hearts of Christian ethics and behaviour, particularly in the face of conflict and adversity. We are called to be agents of change, to be the light in times of darkness, and to show others the power of God’s love and forgiveness. You free yourself from the burden of negativity and also contribute to creating a more loving and harmonious world by choosing to overcome evil with good. Can you trust that justice will be served in His timing by allowing God to be the ultimate judge?
