“You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
Luke 12: 15-21
Is business bad? The rich man in the story built bigger barns for his harvest. Shouldn’t farmers have barns to store their produce efficiently? Where would we work and buy the things that we need if there were no businesses? But Jesus didn’t tell people to be lazy and wasteful. He told us not to be greedy. We shouldn’t store up things for ourselves, instead we should be rich toward God.
The farmer could have prayed and asked God how he should share his surplus harvest with others. He could have paid more to his workers or shared with those in need. Instead, he said to himself, “Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ God said to him, ‘You fool!” What talents and extra possessions do we have that we can share? Do we see them as just for us to enjoy or as gifts from God? Father, please help us to remember that all that we have is yours. We are only stewards, who you have trusted to use our gifts wisely and with generosity.
