“The least among you all is the greatest.”
Luke 9:46-50
Today’s passage illustrates the importance of humility and the nature of Jesus’ kingdom. Jesus, perceiving the thoughts of the disciples, took a little child and set him by his side, saying to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.” This passage emphasises that greatness in the kingdom of God is not based on earthly status or power, but on one’s willingness to serve others and humble oneself. The disciples’ argument over who was greatest reminds us of the need for spiritual maturity and the importance of serving others with humility.
Jesus personifies true greatness: His humility, His self-sacrifice and His refusal to wield power for His own self- interest. This greatness of Jesus is usually unheard of in this world; nevertheless, we should emulate it and shun the greatness this world offers us. Today may be a good day to ask yourself: Are you content with being among the least? Can you be satisfied to be “one with the people” rather than a star or a leader?
