Your only debt should be the debt of mutual love.
Romans 13:8-10
In today’s reading, St Paul invites us to reflect on the greatest debt we have: the debt to love. We may often think our greatest debts are those we owe to the bank or the world; our most important debt is to God and to our neighbour. We are invited to work on this debt each day by loving our neighbour, not only through our words, but through our actions, patience, kindness, forgiveness, and willingness to help. Today, let us examine our hearts in the light of God’s love and ask Him for the grace to become aware of the ways, whether through our words or actions, that we may have offended or caused harm or hurt to others.
When we are tempted to judge, let us ask Jesus to teach us to understand. When we become angry, let us ask Jesus to teach us to forgive. When someone is in need, let us ask Jesus to help us respond with compassion and generosity. Lord, help us to make love the foundation of our decisions each day, so that through our lives we may truly fulfil Your commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves. Amen.
