“Everything now hidden will be made clear.”
Matthew 10:24-33
Our gospel today is part of Jesus’ Missionary discourse, where he prepares the disciples for various challenges they may face when carrying out the mission. He invites them not to shy away from facing these challenges, but to look to him and learn how to persevere in the face of challenges in the mission.
Are we aware of the specific challenges we face when carrying out the mission? Are we tempted to give up the mission or water down the gospel, so that others do not make fun of us?
One particular challenge or temptation Jesus experienced was the feeling of abandonment. He felt that God had abandoned him when he was on the cross, in that moment of ultimate self-sacrifice, the giving of his life. However, Jesus remained faithful. Our feelings can tell us many things, but we need to listen to God and His Word. Jesus reminds us today not to be afraid and to remember that God takes care of us, and will never abandon us, for He knows even the number of hairs on our head.
