 “The commandments of love.”

Matthew 22:34-40

Jesus kept things very simple for the Pharisees and Sadducees. When they came to test him about the “greatest commandment of the law,” he did not go into a lengthy defence of his teaching but broke it down into two commandments: love of God and love of neighbour. This is also a good reminder for us. We can sometimes complicate our Christian faith, but if we strive to fulfil these two commandments, we will fulfil them all.

Jesus extends an invitation to us to love with our entire being. Do we love with all our heart, mind, and soul? Or do we sometimes love half-heartedly? To love with all implies that we are fully present to God, deliberate in our choices, and intentional in our actions. Today, let’s accept Jesus’ invitation to be fully present to him and make choices that will enable us to love with all of our minds, heart, soul, and strength.
