“Clean the inside of the cup first, so that the outside may become clean.”
Matthew 23:23-26
Jesus today addresses the problem of inconsistency in the heart, particularly as he sees it in the Pharisees, who were meant to be leaders and examples of fidelity, integrity, and consistency in living out the faith. Instead, they picked and chose which parts of the Law they would follow.
Jesus points out, as he has many times before, that what matters most is not simply our external actions, but the condition of our hearts. What is the point of appearing to be “good,” “holy,” or “clean” on the outside if, within, our hearts are far from God and lacking in love? True faithfulness is not about appearances or simply following rules; it is about allowing God to transform our hearts so our outward actions genuinely reflect what is within.
May we ask the Lord today for the grace to examine our hearts honestly and to let His love transform us from within, so that the way we live may truly reflect the faith we profess.
