“I will make you the light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
Isaiah 49:1-6
The people of Israel rejoiced in being known and called by God, and in being embraced as His own. In this reading, they are reminded that this identity is not something they earned, but a gift that carries both dignity and purpose. With this privilege comes a responsibility: they are chosen not only for themselves, but for a mission. We can see ourselves in their story. It is easy to feel satisfied with a personal relationship with God, to keep faith as something private and contained. Yet, while our relationship with God is deeply personal, it is never meant to be isolated.
We, too, are called into mission: “to be a light for the nations” through the way we live. As Christians, this missionary dimension is not optional. Without it, faith can quietly become self-centred, focused on “my” fulfilment, “my” peace, or “my” salvation rather than a living witness of love. As we journey through Holy Week, we walk with Christ in His self-giving love, a love poured out for all. How are we bringing light into the darkness around us?
