St Mary of the Cross Mackillop

“Do not worry about tomorrow: your holy Father knows your needs.”

Matthew 6:25-34

Today is the feast day of St Mary of the Cross. She is an example of someone who knew how to trust in God’s Providence and Care. She was persecuted and even excommunicated, but she did not lose her trust in the Lord. When we read today’s Gospel passage, we may question, and even have a slight protest in our heart, how can we not worry about our material needs for our physical life? The invitation today is not to ignore those needs nor be negligent in providing those material needs, not only for ourselves but for those in extreme need. But Jesus is reminding us of another life we have: our eternal life: the life of God within us, which we are also called to care for. Jesus is calling us to give it priority and “to set your heart first on the Kingdom of God and his justice.” And all these things will be given to us.

Like St Mary of the Cross, we are also invited to trust in God’s care and Providence. When we place him first in our lives, he will give us our daily bread. For this reason, Jesus says, “Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow has enough worries of its own.” Each day has enough worries of its own. How do you seek God first in your daily life?
