“How happy are the poor in spirit.”

Matthew 5:1-12

Yesterday we spoke about the importance of “becoming what we receive”. However, to become like Christ, we need to take on his way of life and the virtues he lived by and spoke of in the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are a guide and a way of life for true blessedness and happiness.

The first beatitude that Jesus mentions opens the door for the rest. Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Everything begins with poverty of spirit or humility. Humility opens the door of our heart to God, and when our heart is open to God, we are able to receive his life, love, and kingdom. Let us read the gospel slowly and stop on those words which touch us. We ask Jesus in a special way that we might be granted the gift of being “poor in spirit.”
