“Do not judge, and you will not be judged.”
Matthew 7:1-5
This passage reminds us of the importance of prioritising self-reflection and self- improvement before passing judgment on others. It encourages us to focus on our own actions and behaviours, and work on correcting our own faults before we attempt to guide or criticise others. We can cultivate a sense of humility, empathy, and understanding towards others by acknowledging and addressing our own shortcomings first. The phrase “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” is a powerful reminder against passing judgment on others. It reminds us that we are all subject to God’s judgment.
The imagery of the “speck” and the “plank” in our eyes further emphasises the importance of self-awareness and humility. Jesus teaches us to first address our own faults before criticising others by focusing on the “plank” in our own eye. Matthew 7 calls us to a higher standard of living, one that prioritises self-awareness and humility over judgment and criticism. We can grow spiritually and create a more loving and empathetic world by acknowledging and working on our own shortcomings. Reflect on your actions and judgments today—are you seeing the speck in your brother’s eye while ignoring the plank in your own?
