Sunday of the Word of God

“God chose what is foolish by human reckoning, to shame the wise.“

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

So often, when we hear God’s call to follow him and share in his mission, we hesitate. This resistance rarely comes from a lack of desire to follow or to serve. More often, from a sense of unworthiness, a feeling that we are unqualified, unprepared, or simply not good enough. Today, in our reading, St Paul speaks directly to this very human response. He says, “God chose what is foolish by human reckoning to shame the wise; God chose what is weak by human reckoning to shame the strong. Those whom the world considers common and insignificant are the very ones God has chosen.”

If we are able to follow Jesus and cooperate in his mission, it is not because of our own strength or ability. It is God who calls, and God who gives us every gift we need to respond. Today, let us give thanks for God’s faithful love, and for the precious gift of faith through which he continues to work in and through us.
