“Your light must shine in the sight of men”

Matthew 5:13-16

We are called many things by many people, often defined by our work, our background, or how the world sees us. Yet Jesus gently reminds us of a deeper identity: “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.” What an incredible dignity the Lord places upon us. These words reveal who we are in God’s eyes, not because of what we achieve, but because of who we belong to.

Salt brings flavour, preserves what is good, and prevents decay. Light brings clarity, warmth, and hope, pushing back darkness. Without these elements, the world would be bland and lifeless. In the same way, the world is diminished when we fail to live as salt and light. God calls us today to season our surroundings with kindness, truth, and compassion, and to shine through acts of love, mercy, and justice, often in quiet, unseen ways. As we pray, we can ask ourselves: What is the Lord inviting me to transform or illuminate today? Are fear, busyness, indifference, or self- doubt dimming my light or dulling my witness? May God help us embrace our true identity and live fully as salt and light for the world.
