Sunday 25th of January
“Make up the differences between you instead of disagreeing among yourselves.“
1 Corinthians 1:10-13,17
As we begin this new year, many of us have made resolutions: to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, pray more, and worry less. Today, St Paul offers us another important resolution: “to put aside our differences and, instead of disagreeing among ourselves, to be united in belief and practice.” We know that disagreements, divisions, and rivalries can be a part of our lives; however, St Paul reminds us that they should not be the case for followers of Jesus. We are called to fix our eyes and hearts on Jesus, and to follow him.
No individual, no matter how holy or gifted, should become the centre of our allegiance. Christ is the one we follow. He alone gave his life for us, and it is in him that we find our unity. In our daily life, this means reaching out rather than withdrawing, choosing dialogue over division, forgiveness over resentment, and working together so that our parish becomes a living sign of Christ’s love and unity.
