Sunday 20th of July
“Martha works; Mary listens.”
Luke 10:38-42
As we open this gospel passage today and slowly read it, who do we identify with? Martha, who welcomes Jesus and then busies herself with serving, or Mary, who eagerly sits down at Jesus’ feet and listens attentively to his every word? Perhaps we have both of these attitudes inside of us. However, today, how do we find ourselves? Do we feel the expectation of serving or the need to sit and listen?
Jesus has something to say to us today, and he invites us to take some time to stop and listen to him. As you sit down next to Jesus, how are you feeling? You might like to share your feelings with Jesus. What do you notice about Jesus? What is Jesus’ message to you? Jesus may remind us that we need to find a balance between doing and being in life. Yes, we must work, serve, and welcome, but we must also safeguard time for silence and prayer because prayer gives us the strength and love to serve. Jesus, we pray that you help us find a balance between these two attitudes.
