The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

“The feeding of the five thousand.”

Luke 9:11-17

Today, as we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, we are invited to renew our love for and belief in Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist. How is our love for Jesus in the Eucharist? Do we give Jesus proper reverence and adoration? Do we believe that when we receive the host, we are receiving the Body of Christ?

As we meditate on the passage of the feeding of the 5000 today, we see how it is symbolic of what happens at Mass. When Jesus fed the crowd, he first saw the need. He saw them hungry and in need of healing and hope. He blessed and broke the bread and gave it. Jesus sees us and our needs when we attend Mass. Even though we might not always acknowledge it, we, too, need hope, healing, and nourishment. Today, when we attend Mass, let us be aware of how Jesus comes to us and responds to our deepest needs by blessing, breaking, and giving Himself as nourishment for us.

Lord, we pray that you help us prepare our hearts to receive all that you want to give to us.
