Sunday 6th of April

‘Let the one among you who has not sinned be the first to throw a stone.”

John 8:1-11

On the 5th Sunday of Lent, we are invited to meditate on Jesus’ interaction with the woman caught in adultery. Jesus reminds us through this encounter that He has not come in judgment, but in reconciliation, restoration, and healing. When the woman was brought to him, he reminded those who were ready to condemn her with stones in hand that only those without sin “could throw the first stone.” At this point, all dropped their stones and walked away.

How do we move about the world? Do we move with a spirit of reconciliation, restoration and healing? Where are we in this passage? Have we even taken pleasure or satisfaction in exposing the sins of others? Are we quick to judge others, forgetting that we, too, have sinned, made errors of judgment and broken our relationship with God and others? Today, Lord, we pray that you might give us a heart that is humble, honest and sincere before you and others, a heart that is “slow to anger and rich in mercy”.
