“They do not practice what they preach.“
Matthew 23:1-12
In our passage today, Jesus strongly criticises the Pharisees for their hypocrisy. Though they hold positions of religious authority and teach the law, they fail to live by it themselves. Jesus points out how they focus on outward signs of piety—such as wearing special garments and seeking honor in public— while neglecting the deeper values of humility, justice, and mercy. Their actions are more about being seen and admired by others than truly serving God.
However, more than looking at others, this passage invites us to reflect on our own lives. Are there times when we care more about appearances than authentic faith? Do we seek approval or recognition from others rather than living sincerely before God? It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking religious on the outside while our hearts remain unchanged. Jesus reminds us that greatness in God’s Kingdom is not about status or recognition, but about humility and service. He calls us to live with integrity, letting our actions reflect our beliefs. Instead of performing for others, we are called to live in quiet faithfulness, putting God at the centre of our lives. May we ask for the grace to align our hearts, words, and actions—practicing what we preach in truth and humility.
