“The Law does not allow us to pass judgement on a man without hearing him.”

John 7:40-52

In this passage, we see the division that existed between believers and nonbelievers in Jesus’s time, a division that still exists today. Some genuinely believe that he is the Messiah, the Saviour, and Son of God, and others condemn him without even listening to him.

Nicodemus challenges those who wanted to condemn Jesus, saying, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” Many times we can be like the unbelievers, not allowing Jesus to speak into our lives, decision, and opinions. Do we give Jesus a chance to speak or do we think that we know better and more than Jesus? Do we listen to Jesus’ words in prayer? Let us open our eyes and ears to Jesus in this time of Lent so we can experience his words as our way, the truth, and the life.
