“Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.”

Luke 1:5-25

The Gospel of Luke presents to us how John’s birth to Zechariah and Elizabeth is an answer to their prayer to be able to have a child. But when the message of the Lord was delivered to Zechariah by the angel Gabriel, Zechariah remained incredulous and disbelieving. Zechariah asks, “How can I believe this?” How different to the response Mother Mary gave to the message she received. She said, “How can this be?” Zechariah did not believe he could believe it! Mother Mary was open and trusting that God would give her what she needed to cooperate in God’s Plan.

Have you ever had this experience of earnestly praying for something and then being disbelieving when God answers your prayers? What holds us back from believing? How is your faith in God’s Plan for your life? Does your faith rely on what you are able to do? Or does your faith rely on what God can do in you if you trust him, like Mother Mary?
