“By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.”

John 13:33-38

As followers and disciples of Jesus, part of our mission is in exercising our love for others. What characterises the disciple of Jesus is the quality of love that we have for one another. We aren’t called to love others the way that they love us. We are to model our love on Christ’s love for us.  In today’s reading, Jesus says “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

How does Jesus love us?  He loves us personally, unconditionally and sacrificially, meaning it is not always easy.  As disciples, learning to love means taking time frequently to be with the one who has first loved us. Only then can we receive the kind love we are called to give to others.  If we try to do this on our own, it is impossible.  But with Jesus, all things are possible.
