“If a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it yields a rich harvest.”

John 12:24-26

In today’s reading, Jesus speaks of his death and resurrection by using the symbol of a grain of wheat. Only by falling to the ground and dying and being buried within soil does it produce fruit. For Jesus, it was only through dying on the cross that he was able to rise and conquer sin and death. As Jesus’ followers, the same is true of us, as Jesus says that whoever loves their life in this world will lose it, but those who hate their life will preserve it for eternal life. This means we are willing to die to ourselves and give our life over to God, remembering we are only pilgrims here, and our true home is with God in heaven. How do we do this in the way we work, life and care for others? How is Jesus asking me to die to self today?
