“No one has gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who has come down from heaven.”
John 3:7-15
In today’s passage, Nicodemus seems quite bewildered by Jesus’ words about the need to be “born from above.” He struggles to understand and questions how such a thing could even be possible. At times, we may find ourselves in a similar position when the Word of God confronts us, leaving us confused or unsure of what Jesus is trying to say. In those moments, rather than dismissing the message because we do not immediately understand it, we are invited to pause, reflect, and ask Jesus to reveal its meaning to us more deeply. Understanding often comes not in haste but in stillness and openness.
What becomes clear in this passage is that Jesus is revealing something profound about Himself. He speaks of being the Son of Man and the Son of God, the one who has come down from heaven to offer eternal life. This is His purpose and His mission. To receive this gift of eternal life, we are called to set our hearts and minds on what is above. Jesus teaches that we must be born of the Spirit. Through baptism, we are welcomed into the family of God and called to live as His sons and daughters, not driven by worldly ambitions, but seeking a life of deep union with God. How can we live in that union today?
