“Who are my mother and my brothers? Those that do the will of God.“
Mark 3:31-35
Today, Jesus gently but firmly expands our understanding of family. When told that his mother and relatives are waiting outside, he looks at those gathered around him and declares, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” These words are not a rejection of his earthly family, but an invitation into a deeper communion rooted in obedience and love.
We often define belonging by familiarity, comfort, or blood ties, yet we are called to a relationship shaped by listening and responding to God’s word. To belong to Jesus is to allow our lives to be shaped by his truth, even when it stretches us beyond what feels safe or familiar.
Lord, help us to hear your voice amid the noise of our lives and to recognise that each act of faithfulness draws us closer into your family. Teach us to trust that in doing your will, we discover not only who you are, but whom we are meant to be.
