“Little girl, I tell you to get up.”
Mark 5:21-43
Today’s Gospel readings are beautiful encounters with Jesus. When Jesus is on his way to Jairus’ house to heal Jairus’ little girl, he is met by some people who tell him not to bother anymore. The little girl is dead. Jesus nevertheless continues on his way and enters the room where the little girl lies. He leaves those doubters outside and only takes his disciples and the girls’ parents into the room. He takes into the room those who believe that Jesus can bring life back to the little girl.
What does this mean for us? The experience of loss of any kind is like a little death. And we can keep the sadness of loss to ourselves and resign ourselves to going through it alone. Jesus can ask us the same question: “What is all this commotion and wailing about ?” Why are you sad? And it is in times of grieving any loss that we, too, may have to leave that doubting part of ourselves outside and allow Jesus to enter into the room of our heart.
Let Jesus today take you by the hand as he did the little girl and say to you, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” “Little boy, I say to you, get up.”
