“The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath“

Mark 2:23-28

There are hundreds of laws in the Old Testament. Traditional Jews respect the 10 commandments so much that they follow these extra laws to make sure that they don’t break the commandments. The Pharisees were strict in following the letter of the law, but they forgot about the spirit of the law. As Christians, we don’t follow all of the Jewish laws, such as what foods we eat.

Jesus challenged the Pharisees and he challenges us to ask ourselves and to ask God in prayer why we follow rules. Do we follow a Church rule because it is our routine or because we feel superior to others? Or are we being faithful and following God’s law of love? Respecting the sabbath, and other rules, are made for people to come closer to God. God has given us the opportunity to educate our consciences about the teachings of the Church and to use our free will to follow them. Thank you Jesus for giving us your law as a guide to lead us to your kingdom of Heaven.
