“Unless I go, the Advocate will not come to you.”
John 16:5-11
We may wish that we were one of Jesus’ disciples who heard His teachings face to face. But Jesus has given us an even greater gift than of seeing Him in person. He has given us the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will enter into our hearts. Jesus wants to send us the Spirit as He did for the Apostles. The Apostles were confused and full of fear when Jesus was with them as a human. But the Spirit filled them with understanding of the Good News and with courage. The Apostles transformed from being only followers to become leaders of Christian communities that spread to the ends of the earth.
Jesus, please help us to prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, so that we can be open to the gifts that You will give to us. Help us to believe that you have gone before us for our own good. We want to grow from being passive children in our faith to being Your responsible, adult followers, like the Apostles.
