“’My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God.”
Luke 8:19-21
In today’s gospel, Jesus’s response to those informing him that his mother and brothers were outside might seem confusing. However, Jesus does not reject his family; instead, he broadens the definition of family to include all who hear and live by the word of God. Jesus considers anyone who hears and practices the word of God to be part of his family, including each of us.
How do we feel as we pray with this passage today? How are we striving to be hearers and doers of the Word daily? We might ask Jesus, Lord, do you consider me to be your brother or sister? We pray that as we journey through his life, we might draw ever closer to Jesus, hearing and practising his word, so that at the end of our earthly life, we might more fully experience the loving embrace of the Holy Trinity.
