“Keep alive in yourselves what you were taught in the beginning.”
1 John 2:22-28
What were we taught at the beginning that we have to keep alive? We have been taught that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. Christ means anointed and in the Old Testament, there were three main groups of people who were anointed: prophets, priests, and kings. Jesus was the fulfilment of all of these roles for His people.
The Jews believe that the Messiah is the coming king who is King David’s true heir and the eternal king of God’s chosen people. The Jews are still waiting for the Messiah, but we believe that Jesus is the perfect realisation of God’s promises. St John says that if we keep Jesus alive in our hearts, we will have the Father and His eternal life in us. Do we acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God? God wants to anoint us as He anointed His son, so that we can continue His mission. If we believe in Jesus, He will treat us as His brothers and sisters and the Father will treat us as His children.
