“The feeding of the five thousand.”

John 6:1-15

In today’s gospel, Jesus sits down to take a breather with the disciples. However, his break did not last long. We are told that when Jesus saw a large crowd approaching, his first thought was how to feed them. He has concerns for them and takes responsibility for their material and spiritual hunger. How do we react when we see people approach us when we are on a break or holiday or taking time out for ourselves? When we spend time with Jesus, he teaches us to be generous; he teaches us how to put ourselves on hold to respond to the needs of others.

Jesus reminds us to offer what we have, no matter how small it may seem, and he will work miracles with it. Just as the five loaves and two fishes were enough for Jesus to feed the multitude, our humble offerings can also be transformed into something extraordinary.

We can ask Jesus in our prayer, Lord, what are you asking me to give you today? What are my five loaves in two fishes? And who do you want to feed today through my life? We pray that today, Jesus might find us ready, available, willing, and generous enough to share what we have with those around us.
