“A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse.”

Isaiah 11:1-10

Jesse was the father of King David in the Old Testament. St Luke starts his gospel by stating the genealogy of Jesus back to Adam. St Luke shows how Jesus was a descendant of David and Jesse to emphasise how Jesus was the fulfilment of God’s promises to his people. We can reflect on the fruit that Jesus has brought into the world as a shoot from God’s people. He brought wisdom and counsel and might.

But there is still so far to go to achieve the kingdom of God on earth. How great would it be to be part of a world where the wolf could live with the lamb? Jesus wants us to help create a place where no one will hurt or destroy, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord. How is Jesus calling us to make His kingdom come? He wants us to share our faith in Him and in God our father. Then Jesus will be able to stand as a signal of peace to all the peoples.
