“You are merely servants.”
Luke 17: 7-10
How do we look at our day when we review it? We might say, “I did this”, or “I failed at that”. Our society emphasises the self. Self-help books are very popular – how can we reach our full potential? How can we use our wills to achieve our goals? Jesus is the opposite. He said to His Father in the Garden of Gethsemane during His passion, “Not my will, but yours be done”. But He also lived this desire out every day, every time He prayed.
How would our attitudes and our lives change if we looked at ourselves as God’s servants, or even His slaves? We would say to ourselves, “We are worthless servants; we have done only what we ought to have done!” It does not matter whether we are rich and admired, or poor and unappreciated. Our only focus should be, are we like Jesus in doing God’s will? Jesus, please help us to have your simple aim of serving our Father and each other, so that you can set us free from the world’s distractions and give your graces of peace and humility.
